Fairfax, Vir., … STEM* students enter the world of manufacturing technology at the 2012 NIMS Student Skills Center, a free experience for education programs throughout the week of IMTS at Chicago’s McCormick Place, Sept. 10-15.

This free, week-long event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students, educators, school administrators and guidance counselors to gain a first-hand glimpse into in the world’s most cutting-edge technology and reinforce a nationwide drive for STEM education at the secondary and post-secondary level.

IMTS is the largest manufacturing technology show in North America and a trip to the NIMS Student Skills Center includes a free entry badge to the entire show.  What’s more, it is a chance to stimulate technical interest in young people to eliminate antiquated stereotypes of STEM-related careers and to bridge the gap between education and industry.

Individuals at all levels of learning are invited to attend the NIMS Student Skills Center throughout the week of IMTS 2012 at no charge.  Registration is valid throughout the week of IMTS, so attendees are welcome to come back during show hours, Sept. 10–15.

As the big event approaches, an online Educator Portal will be added to the NIMS Student Skills Center website.  This addition will bring pre-show resources to educators, such as a list of Skills Center exhibitors, Featured Exhibitors throughout IMTS, suggested pathways to highlight different career fields, and more, all with the purpose of maximizing attendees’ time while at the show.  Educators can also access suggested at-the-show activities, plus a collection of post-show resources to bring the IMTS back into the classroom.

As of early May 2012, Student Skills Center exhibitors include BobCAD-CAM, FANUC Robotics, Lincoln Electric (with the American Welding Society), Sandvik Coromant, Seco Tools, Siemens PLM Software, Southwestern Industries, Symbol Job Training, and Women in Today’s Manufacturing.  More exhibitors are expected by the September show opening.
