Reshoring: Success Stories in the Return of Manufacturing Work

Jun 20, 2012

My favorite reshoring case is from the toy maker WHAM-O, which brought back 50% of its Frisbee production to California and Michigan from China. If toys can be made competitively in California and Michigan, almost everything should be reshorable somewhere in the U.S.!

You can now easily document and promote your products’ role in your customers’ reshoring successes. In the May 23, 2012, IMTS Insider we presented the Manufacturing Technology Drives Reshoring program. The idea is to get industry and national publicity for you and for your customers who are using your products to make U.S. or North American manufacturing competitive enough to bring work back from offshore.

Recent surveys show reshoring is accelerating. A 2012 MIT Supply Chain Forum survey found that 61% of big companies are considering bringing work back to the U.S. An MFG.com survey found that 40% of contract manufacturers have done some reshored work this year. Your products are helping make these trends possible. It’s time to get the publicity you have earned!

You have until August 15 to submit your cases and make them eligible for IMTSTV and for my IMTS presentations to the morning crowds on the Manufacturing Stage between the North and South Halls. We urge you also to post the cases in your booth.

We look forward to helping promote your successes!
