We will share an overview of how we combined modeling and simulation, topology optimization, and generative design with advanced manufacturing to design, build, and test a flight test vehicle in just a few months and do so at a fraction of the cost of using traditional methods.

Every plant floor has an AI dashboard now. Most still need a person to notice the alert, decide what to do, and act on it. Eric Thorsen, Infor's Industry Principal for Industrial Manufacturing, argues that most systems called "AI agents" today are stuck at that step. He uses the same visibility-to-autonomy pattern the machine tool industry already went through with CNC and adaptive control to draw a clear line: AI that tells you something versus AI that does something. He backs it with a real Infor customer running AI agents that update bill-of-materials pricing automatically when vendor rates change, no one re-keying it. The audience leaves with a sharper definition of "agent," one they can apply back on the floor Monday.

Lace up and run to fund STEM education.

When designing for mass manufacturing, engineers must keep production methods in mind. The wrong design decision can add cost and complexity. But most engineers have never worked in production and it’s impossible to have experienced production staff weigh in on every design. In this session, Jeremy Andrews, Co-Founder and CTO of CoLab, demonstrates how a large automotive supplier is bridging this gap with AI agents that flag process specific DFM risks for machined, injection molded, and sheet metal parts.

This paper discusses the application of digital twin technology in surface?finish validation for 5?axis machines prior to actual machining. Five?axis machining is a complex process, and surface finish can be influenced by numerous factors, including machine dynamics, machining conditions (acc/dec and smoothing functions), tool paths, tooling, and feeds and speeds. Traditionally, these factors had to be tested and verified individually on physical machines to ensure optimal surface quality—a practice that consumed significant machine time.

A digital twin is a virtual model that replicates a physical machine tool and its operating environment in real time, enabling rapid optimization of surface finish without requiring tests on an actual machine. In this paper, the implementation of digital twin technology using CNC Guide 2 and the Surface Estimation tool to achieve optimal surface finish is discussed in detail. Real?life examples of parts from both machine tool builders (MTBs) and end users are included to illustrate the practical application of this approach.

Whether managing production in spreadsheets or using your ERP's scheduling functionality, most hi-mix/lo-volume manufacturers have a very difficult time getting visibility of their future state of their production environment much further out than just a few days, maybe a week or two.

The Civil Reserve Manufacturing Network (CRMN) is a new initiative at the Department of War to broaden domestic manufacturing capability and capacity in the defense industrial base during wartime by providing companies incentives and other considerations during peacetime, as inspired by the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF).  This session will provide information on the DoW CRMN Implementation Plan, and more importantly, solicit feedback and ideas from the manufacturing community on what types of incentives would be attractive for such a program and what barriers exist for a company interested in participating.  The presentation will be followed by “office hours” where DoW representatives will be available to answer questions not covered during the session.

We project over 300,000 manufacturing jobs will be reshored in 2026 by about 1,500 OEMs and their suppliers whose work is so essential to the OEMs’ reshoring decisions and success. Two of those suppliers, both prominent shops, are the winners of the 2026 National Metalworking Reshoring Award.
