Ask someone to picture manufacturing automation, and they’ll probably imagine a six-axis robot tending a CNC machine. It's the default mental image. But it also represents a huge misconception about automation. Robots are foundational to modern manufacturing, but they’re only one tool in a much larger toolbox. Automation isn’t defined by the equipment you install, rather the amount of human intervention you remove from a production process. Sometimes that means adding a robot. Sometimes it’s a bar feeder, an automatic pallet changer, in-process probing, machine vision, or software that gives operators better visibility into what’s happening on the shop floor. Uncertainty is the new baseline for manufacturers. Manufacturers aren’t building a lot of new plants (new factory construction is sharply down from its 2022 peak), yet they continue to invest heavily in automation. Manufacturers are increasingly investing in technologies that help them get more productivity from the facilities, machines, and people they already have, rather than expanding factory footprints. Collaborative robots, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), machine vision, and flexible automation systems continue to gain traction. They’re solving specific operational problems for manufacturers without requiring a complete redesign of the factory. It’s why many successful automation projects don’t begin with a robot. The first step is identifying where people are spending time on repetitive, low-value tasks. Every unnecessary touchpoint (loading parts, transferring material, manually collecting production data, or repeatedly inspecting the same feature) offers an opportunity to improve throughput and free skilled employees to focus on work that requires judgment and experience. Download NowInstead of asking, "Should we automate?" manufacturers begin asking, "Where can automation have the biggest impact?" That shift also explains why the most successful automation investments are often incremental. A pallet changer keeps a spindle cutting while an operator prepares the next job. A probing routine eliminates manual offset adjustments. A vision system catches defects before they become scrap. Each removes a touchpoint. Together, they build a more capable operation. As Milton Guerry, president of Schunk (IMTS booth #432010) and a longtime leader within the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), recently observed, many people view robots as something magical. In reality, they're simply well-engineered tools designed to perform a job. The real challenge, and opportunity, is understanding which tool solves the problem in front of you. Automation isn’t a destination reserved for lights-out factories or multinational manufacturers. It’s a continuous improvement journey of making better use of people, equipment, and information. Every shop is somewhere on that journey. The question isn’t whether to begin, it’s deciding what the next step should be.
