AMT Hosts Cans & Coats Drive

Category: Events Dec 12, 2018

Cans Collection

Every year during the holidays, AMT staff organize a drive that serves those in need in their region. This year AMT is hosting a “Cans & Coats” drive and aims to make it a record breaker (like IMTS 2018!) with 100 percent participation.

To remind staff about the type of food needed, the organizers have been sending reminder emails such as “Make It a Macaroni Monday” to bring in canned pasta, “Thirsty Thursday” to bring in 100 percent juice and “Prepare for a Chili Weekend” to bring in canned chili. AMT is aiming to collect 250 cans from the staff of nearly 70.

The cans will go to the charitable organization Food for Others, which distributes food to those needing food when an emergency strikes, and for the growing number of working poor who are unable to make ends meet and need to supplement their inadequate food supplies. Nearly 60,000 people in Northern Virginia are food insecure.

Call for Winter Coats

Even though Virginia is a southern state and considered mild compared to other areas of the United States, winter-month (Dec.–Feb.) temperatures average below freezing and may include a few days below zero F°.

AMT is collecting a variety of coats (old and new, children and adults, all sizes) that will be donated to the coat drive operated by Our Lady of Good Council Church in Vienna, Va., which will distribute to those in Northern Virginia without the funds to purchase warm winter coats. Health experts report that even a two-degree drop in body temperature results in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination, and confusion. Adults cannot work effectively, and children find it difficult to learn. For most, a warm coat solves the problem, but for the nearly 15 percent of Americans living in poverty, a warm winter coat is a budget “extra.” AMT hopes to provide warmth to those individuals in need of a winter coat.
