The future of the manufacturing industry lies in the hands of the next generation. It’s now the job of the manufacturers to find and develop this new talent and get them excited to enter the manufacturing industry. Jared Evans, Project Manager at MAJiK Systems, sat down with IMTSTV at the 2015 [MC]2 Conference to give his recommendations on how to drive interest in the manufacturing industry.

“I think in manufacturing you’re going against some preconceived notions of what a job can be,” said Evans. With manufacturing companies competing against tech companies for the same pool of talent, how do we drive interest in the manufacturing industry? The answer—be more like a tech company.

“We definitely have something to learn from more traditional tech companies,” Evans explained. Providing flexible working environments and interesting projects are some of the key takeaways of why tech companies are so appealing to the younger generations. “There are some very cool things going on in manufacturing that I think we should be highlighting,” said Evans. This changes the preconceived notion of what it means to work in manufacturing.

Getting students interested and involved in the manufacturing industry is the first step. There are a lot of students looking to work for these big tech companies who don’t realize what a rewarding career they could have in manufacturing. We’re making the world we live in and working with the most advanced and precise tools ever built. Connecting with these students through community colleges and tech schools to show them the amazing and innovative world of manufacturing has to be part of the game plan.
